In 1978, a young man named Fernando Muñoz and his wife, Maria, decided to finally bring a lifelong dream to fruition — open their own “taqueria” in the heart of Chicago’s Little Village. With little more than a catchy name — “El Chisme” means “Gossip” in Spanish — and a passion for making traditional Mexican food, their quaint little “taqueria” soon found a loyal following. By the early 80′s, El Chisme had built a reputation for itself serving typical Mexican staples such as tacos, tortas, burritos and enchiladas with a keen attention to freshness and a love for authenticity.
Over the years and as their customer base grew, so did their menu. Desiring to introduce variety to their list of traditional Mexican dishes, the El Chisme family came up with a savory recipe for rotisserie chicken in 1984 and it instantly became the specialty of the house! Shortly thereafter, their original Mexican style pizza (with spicy Mexican chorizo, onions, and jalapeño peppers) was added to the menu and it, too, became an instant hit with their patrons. It was clear that the public was ready for more than just tacos and burritos, and that’s where El Chisme flourished.
